Floral Flashback Week: Dogwood Bleeding Heart with Simon Says Stamp!

February 20, 2025

This post was sponsored by Simon Says Stamp. Thanks, Simon!

Hi friends! I am back with another installment of my Floral Flashback Week, in which I play with some of the older flower sets that I have illustrated for Simon Says Stamp. There’s always a chance that these sets won’t be around for much longer, so I wanted to take another opportunity to share some inspiration. As my style has evolved over the last several years, I always enjoy revisiting old favorites with fresh eyes to see if I can come up with something interesting. Let’s get started with the details on my project for today featuring the Dogwood Bleeding Heart Background stamp!

*I have gathered links to all of the products used at the bottom of the post for your convenience, using affiliate links. Thank you for shopping with my links! I truly appreciate your support for my work!*

To begin my project, I stamped the Dogwood Bleeding Heart cling stamp on some white cardstock using Altenew’s Permanent Gray Mist Ink, which is a great ink to use with no-line alcohol ink coloring. Pulling colors from my Copic and OLO marker collections, I colored these blooms and foliage in vibrant shades of fuchsia, lime, and “white” for the dogwood flowers. To achieve these “white” blooms, the trick is to use a little “reverse psychology” by surrounding the white blooms with vibrant colors, as well as using very pale colors on only the shadowed areas, blending them out with the colorless blender marker. As with all no-line coloring, keeping the edges crisp and maintaining the contrast on the images on top versus the images beneath them is the key to achieving shape and dimension on those white images.

After I had finished coloring the images themselves, I used a pale aqua OLO marker to color the background, creating a soft, yet vibrant, full-color panel. I think it looks almost screen-printed! I am in love with the color palette, as well; the pale aqua with fuchsia and white reminds me of something from Lilly Pulitzer.

For the greeting, I used a simple white Scripty Thanks die cut adhered at the open space on the bottom of the card using liquid adhesive. I tied a thin white silk ribbon around the top of the card front before adhering it to my card base, then added a few Opal Pawsitively Dazzling Gems near the greeting for a touch of extra sparkle and texture!

Well, that’s all for my project today. I hope you’re enjoying this walk down memory lane with me! I am having so much fun! I hope it encourages you to look at your older products with fresh eyes to see what new life you can breathe into them. Thanks so much for stopping by today, and have a marvelous day!

More Simon Says Stamp Out Of This World Inspiration with Karin Markers!

June 24, 2023

This post was sponsored by Simon Says Stamp. Thanks, Simon!

Hi friends! I’m back again today with some more inspiration using my newest illustration for Simon Says Stamp: Dogwood Bleeding Heart. After I received this set, I set out to color it using a variety of mediums, and I’ve shared it colored with Copics HERE and colored pencils HERE. Today, I’ve got a project created using Karin Brushmarker Pro markers. I think that it looks so pretty colored with any medium! Let’s get started with the details!

In previous projects, I’ve oriented the Dogwood Bleeding Heart stamp so that the bleeding heart flowers towards the bottom of the stamp were gracefully dripping down the card front, but for today’s project, I wanted to show more of the dogwood flowers that are towards the top of the image. I heat embossed the image onto some Fabriano Artistico Hot Press paper, which is my favorite paper to use when working with Karin Brushmarker Pro markers. I find the smooth surface of this paper works beautifully with the transparent watercolor mediums like the Karin markers. I heat embossed the image using White Satin Pearl embossing powder to keep the image soft and light.

When working with watercolor markers, I mostly prefer to scribble out the color on a ceramic palette, then pick up the color with my damp paintbrush. This allows me to control the intensity of color that I add to the watercolor paper, as well as allowing me to easily add subtle washes of color to my image. These subtle washes of color add extra interest to the image and allow me to create custom colors with these markers. I painted the dogwoods in shades of pale peachy pink, adding bright magenta bleeding hearts and evergreen foliage. I was so happy with how this one came out!

After I’d finished watercoloring, I trimmed the A2 panel down slightly, then mounted it on an A2 panel of Juniper cardstock from Concord and 9th using foam adhesive, leaving a coordinating green frame around the edge of my watercolored panel. I heat embossed a greeting from the XL Spring Greetings stamp set onto some more Juniper cardstock using white embossing powder, then die cut it with the coordinating dies. I popped it up using more foam tape right in the center of the card, finally adding a few iridescent gems for some sparkle and textural interest!

Well, that’s all for my project today! Be sure to check out the Simon Says Stamp blog for Day 2 of the Out Of This World blog hop… there are tons of prizes up for grabs! Thanks so much for stopping by today, and have a marvelous day!

Simon Says Stamp Out Of This World Release Day!

June 21, 2023

This post was sponsored by Simon Says Stamp. Thanks, Simon!

Hi there! It’s new release day for Simon Says Stamp, and this month’s Out Of This World release is so much fun!! I even have a new illustration included in the release: the Dogwood Bleeding Heart background stamp! Months ago, I saw a beautiful image of dogwood flowers interspersed with bleeding heart flowers that were gracefully spilling over a white picket fence and just had to recreate it. I have a simple project to share with you today to introduce this new stamp set to you, so let’s get started with the details!

I began by stamping the Dogwood Bleeding Heart stamp onto a panel of Hammermill cardstock using Intens-ified Black ink. I used my Copic markers for this card, creating the super pale pink dogwood flowers by coloring the outer edges of the flower petals a very pale pink, fading the color out with the colorless blender towards the center. I added some very pale lavender/grey shadows where the petals overlap, then did a “glaze” in the very center of the flower with a super pale yellow marker. I haven’t done much coloring from the outside in like this, and I think I will be doing it again very soon! It’s such a neat effect!

Once I’d finished coloring the image, I used my super sharp scissors to fussy cut around the edge of the image. When designing this stamp, I made sure to create a complete image so that you could use it in it’s entirety as a full background or fussy cut around the edges of the image as I’ve done here!

I popped up the image on a white A2 card front that I had die cut using the Detail Ringlet cover plate die from Simon Says Stamp. This cover plate adds the perfect amount of subtle texture to your background, which I love for use with bold, colorful focal points! I added a simple sentiment from the Beautiful Friend stamp set, stamped with black pigment ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder, then fussy cut. The final touch was a few shining black gems to add one last accent of stark black!

Well, that’s all for my project today, but I have lots more inspiration to share with you from the Simon Says Stamp Out Of This World release! Be sure to come back later this week for the Out Of This World Blog Hop!! Thanks so much for stopping by today, and have a marvelous day!
