Magenta and Mustard- Fashion Inspiration!

July 14, 2023

This post was sponsored by Simon Says Stamp. Thanks, Simon!

I have mentioned in other blog posts that I frequently find myself inspired by fashion-the cuts, the patterns, the textures, the sparkle… I love clothes and accessorizing to look as cohesive and put-together as possible. My Grammy always made sure that she looked as perfect as could be when she went out of the house, from her Lancôme mascara to her pantyhose (that she wore nearly every day of her life, including to the beach, haha!), and so it is to her that I attribute my meticulous attention to detail. Color schemes are one of my favorite ways to play with stamps and dies; pairing interesting and sometimes unusual color combinations on every element of a project is like a puzzle to me. I have a dress that is the most beautiful shade of golden mustard yellow with big fat magenta blooms all over it. So unique, that I needed to recreate it on a card front using another of my illustrations for Simon Says Stamp: Celebrate Rose Corner!

I began by stamping the Celebrate Rose Corner onto some golden mustard cardstock found amongst my (copious) cardstock stash using white pigment ink. I angled it so that it was gracefully dripping down the front of my A2 card front and spilling over the sides. The large size of this image makes it great for creating full backgrounds as well as rotating to use part of the image on the corners of your card! I then used my Caran D’Ache colored pencils to do some no line coloring in shades of deep magenta and maroon, adding lots of white highlights to provide tons of contrast. The intense yellow cardstock beneath the pencil layers doesn’t completely disappear, but it’s very subtle; my husband said it looked almost like the roses had been dusted with pollen! The pencils do a good job of popping off the color saturated background with just a hint of yellow undertone.

Once I’d finished coloring, I die cut the image with the coordinating die. The image is complete on all sides, so it’s easy to rotate it and use as much or as little as you’d like!

After I’d finished with my bright pink roses, I used the Imperia Plate to die cut another panel of the same golden yellow cardstock. This cover plate adds a beautifully intricate pierced texture to the background, perfect for adding a little bit of extra interest behind the bold pink roses. I also die cut one of the biggest workhorses in my craft room: the A2 Thin Frames. I use these frame dies on a huge portion of my projects. They’re perfect for adding the most subtle of accents, especially in a situation like this, in which the tone-on-tone frame finishes off the visual rectangle provided by the floral spray draped across the front of the card, but doesn’t add any other color or much extra bulk.

I popped up all of the die cut pieces onto the pierced background die cut using foam adhesive, then die cut the Basic Trio Dies (which are currently out of stock but you can always sign up for email notifications when it comes back in!) three times from some coordinating green cardstock, adhering them together using liquid adhesive. I nestled the greeting amongst the foliage and popped them up with a double layer of foam tape to help give them some extra interest. Finally, I added a few matte gold pearls which coordinate beautifully with the golden background.

I hope you enjoyed this project! I love creating with such minimal colors, which I think creates such a cohesive, intentional design but definitely doesn’t skimp on the vibrancy. Thanks so much for stopping by today, and have a marvelous day!

February 2021 My Monthly Hero Release Blog Hop+Giveaway!

February 1, 2021

Hi there! February is upon us… finally! Welcome to the perfectly rectangular month that is February, 2021! (Look on your calendar if you don’t know what I mean, haha!) The Hero Arts My Monthly Hero kit is launching today, and we are visualizing a tropical vacation with some super fun vintage Hawaiian/tiki images and all things beachy and tropical! You should have arrived here from Debi Adams and your next stop is Ilina Crouse.

This month’s kit is full of fantastic goodies, including:

• 6” x 8” Clear Stamp Set
• 21 Coordinating Frame Cuts
• Tropical Flower Washi Tape
• Sand Embossing Powder, 0.5 oz.
• 6 5.5″ x 8.5″ Cardstock Sheets (2 each in Turquoise, Marrs Green, Coral)

This month’s kit is valued at $70, but is available for only $34.99! These kits frequently sell out very quickly, so don’t hesitate to purchase, because once it’s gone, it’s gone! You can also subscribe to ensure that you get your own kit every month.

When searching for inspiration for my project, I turned to Pinterest and typed in “vintage tiki” and found a plethora of fun imagery to help jumpstart my creativity. One of the images that I found was a tiki mask and flowers with a bright red, khaki, and turquoise color scheme, which was super fun to translate into a card using the main kit and the Water Ripples Bold Prints background stamp!

I began by heat embossing lots of the different images from the main kit onto some Sand cardstock using white embossing powder. I then used Caran D’Ache Luminance colored pencils to add lots of vibrant color in a red, white, and turquoise color scheme. I absolutely adore the look of vibrant colored pencils on kraft paper. So striking! After I’d colored everything, I die cut the images with the coordinating dies, included in the main kit.

For the card base, I used the new Water Ripples Bold Prints background stamp to create a tone-on-tone card base. I stamped the image on some Paradise cardstock using Blue Raspberry ink. It looks just like the bottom of a swimming pool to me! Such a fun background!

I die cut a Oval Woodgrain Frames Infinity Die from some white cardstock and popped it up on the patterned card front using foam adhesive. I then arranged the Hawaiian die cuts in a cluster and adhered them using both liquid and foam adhesive. For the greeting, I heat embossed the coordinating sentiment from the main kit on some strips of Sand cardstock using white embossing powder, then added those with some more foam adhesive. The final touch was a few white Neutrals Enamel Dots for a few more pops of white.

Well that’s all for my project today! Now, we have some fun giveaway information for you!
We will give away one $50 gift card, drawn from the comments left across the hop. Enter by Sunday, February 7th at 11:59pm pacific, and the winner will be announced on the Hero Arts blog the following week. The more comments you leave, the more chances you have to win!

Your next stop is Ilina Crouse. Thanks so much for stopping by today, and happy hopping!

Darling Dahlias+Giveaway!

September 29, 2020

Hi there! Today is a special-ish day for me… it’s my 35th birthday today! This covid-quarantine-birthday with two babies and two medium-sized kiddos is definitely not how I imagined spending my 35th birthday, but we’re gonna make the best of it grilling out and some yummy homemade apple pie! (My hubby makes it for me with extra thick crust. Yummm.) This has been quite a transformative year for me in many ways, including my newfound interest in drawing and stamp illustration! I am so grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve been lucky enough to have over the last year, not the least of which is illustrating six different stamp sets for Honey Bee Stamps! (I’ll link them all at the bottom of the post in case you want to check them out. 😉 ) Today’s card is using one of my newest sets: Darling Dahlias.

I used both watercolors and Copics to color my card sets from last week, so I thought for today’s card, I would do some pencil coloring. The images in the Darling Dahlias set are nice and large and great for use with colored pencils. Let’s get started with the details!

I began by stamping the blooms and foliage on some emerald green cardstock using white pigment ink. I find that the white pigment ink disappears into the pencil coloring quite seamlessly, so I tend to use that for my no-line pencil coloring on colored cardstock.

I love using Caran D’Ache Luminance colored pencils to add really vibrant pencil coloring to my colored card stock. I colored the images, then used the coordinating Honey Cuts to die cut the finished images out.

I stamped an emerald green background panel using the Farmhouse Check background stamp and some darker green ink, then arranged the Darling Dahlias in a swag and adhered them on the checkered background panel using foam adhesive. I added a greeting using sentiment dies from the new Slimline Blanket Sentiments and some gems for sparkle.

Now, to celebrate my newest sets and my birthday, I thought I’d do a giveaway! I will select three winners to receive one of my stamp sets from Honey Bee Stamps. All you have to do to win is be a blog follower (either via email or WordPress) and leave me a comment telling me whether you love birthday cake or pie better! I’m sorry international friends… with the way international postage is these days, I’m only doing continental US for this giveaway. I will leave the giveaway open until October 6, 2020.

Good luck! Thanks so much for stopping by today, and have a marvelous day!
