Spellbinders March 2018 Release Blog Hop+giveaway!

March 14, 2018

Good morning! I have an exciting post for you today… Spellbinders is having a fabulous blog hop to celebrate their March Release. There are some truly stunning and versatile dies included in this new release of four new collections: Classics (March), On the Wings of Love by Joanne Fink, Good Vibes Only by Stephanie Low, and the Sew Sweet Collection by Tammy Tutterow. I was able to create three projects for today (including a video!) using some of the pretty new dies in the Sew Sweet Collection. You should have arrived here from Sharyn Johnson Sowell‘s blog, and your next stop is Melissa Phillips‘s blog.

For my first project, I used one of the pretty edgers in the Sew Sweet die collection combined with some loose watercoloring to create this simple-but-pretty project. Here’s a video on my process:

A quick overview of my process in case you can’t watch the video: I started by stamping and heat embossing a floral swag from Altenew’s Just Because stamp set on the upper corner of a panel of Arches Cold Press watercolor paper using pearl embossing powder. I then used the Hero Arts watercolors to do some simple, loose watercoloring.

After watercoloring my image, I used the ribbon scallop die in the Sew Sweet die collection to die cut some pretty blue card stock from Hero Arts. I threaded a white velvet ribbon through and added a white velvet bow. I stamped a greeting from Just Because using Versafine, then embossed it using the pearl embossing powder to create a pretty charcoal pearl embossed greeting. I popped up the ribbon scallop die cut using dimensional adhesive and added a thin strip of yellow card stock above it to further coordinate with the colors in the watercolored image.

For the next project, I focused on the adorable little scene building dies included in the Sweet Tweets die collection. I utilized my (ahem, extensive) colored card stock collection, die cutting several elements from brightly colored card stock. After I had a vague idea of how I wanted to arrange the die cuts, I blended some Salty Ocean Distress Oxide inks around the edge of a panel of polka dotted patterned paper (say that three times fast haha!) to create a halo of blue sky. I thought the polka dotted paper worked well with the homey, shabby chic look of the cute birdie and flowers!

I arranged the little scene using a combination of dimensional foam adhesive and liquid adhesive to create lots of dimension. After I had adhered everything to the card front, I added a few jewels and some Nuvo drops to the centers of the flowers. I love adding those little extra details to plain die cuts. The final step was to add a sweet sentiment from Papertrey Ink.

For this last project, I decided to add some Copic details to the pretty flowers in the Posies and Pennies die set from the Sew Sweet Collection.  I started by die cutting several flowers from the Posies and Pennies die set using aqua, coral, white, and red card stock from Hero Arts. Because these die cuts are quite simple, I decided to add some shading and details with my Copic markers. I was able to quickly add some shading and made these plain flower and leaf die cuts pop with a few quick strokes of a Copic marker!

I die cut a pale gray stitched rectangle (this Posies and Pennies collection has a ton of versatile dies included in it!), then added some white die cut scalloped lines from the Sew Sweet die set. I arranged my flowers in a bouquet across my card front, then added some black to the centers of each flower, followed by some Hero Arts Crystal Lacquer pen. The greeting is a simple “you inspire me” from Altenew’s Penned Rose stamp set stamped in black on a strip of white card stock. I adhered it to the front of the bouquet. The final touch was to add some Oyster Gray Nuvo drops around the edge of the bouquet.

Well, what do you think of these fabulous new products?? Aren’t they just amazing? So many fun things you can do with Spellbinders dies!

How about a giveaway?! Spellbinders has generously offered a $25 gift certificate to the Spellbinders website for one lucky commenter! Simply leave a comment on this blog post by March 20, 2018 at noon. I will select a winner and announce it here on the blog!

My favorites for 2017!

December 31, 2017

Good morning! Umm…. it’s the last day of 2017. HOW is that possible? It seems like just yesterday that I was packing up our holiday decorations at our old house and trying to decide where to put all of the kids’ new toys. This year has held many changes for me, both personally and in blog-land. We moved to a tiny town, which is somewhat isolated from the amenities of being near a larger city to which I had grown so accustomed. But we love our new house, and it’s really just perfect for us in our current season of life. My kiddos started school, which is somewhat liberating and also terrifying, because how are they old enough to be in school?! I also joined some new design teams and left some. I made my first videos. I really dug in to my coloring mediums and tried to improve in my accuracy and technique. I’ve been given some absolutely amazing opportunities this year, and I could not be more grateful for them. But…… I think 2018 is going to really knock the socks off of 2017, which is saying something!

Here are my top ten favorite projects from 2017! (Click on each photo to be taken to the individual blog posts.)

Phew! Thats a lot of projects! Looking over all of them, I’m happy to see that there are a few non-flower projects that made this list… even a few critters! I am slowly growing to love critters. They present a new challenge for me! I still love my flowers, in any and all mediums, but it’s nice to know that I can work with critters and actually like the results!

I hope you all enjoyed this little trip down memory lane as much as I did! It’s interesting to me to see how I’ve changed over the last year… different photography style, different coloring mediums, different style in general! (I don’t think my love of flowers and/or coloring will ever really go away though haha!) I absolutely cannot WAIT to see what 2018 brings! Some thrilling developments are in the works, and I am chomping at the bit to share them with you. Soon enough!!! Eek!

I hope you have an absolutely marvelous New Year’s Eve celebration and a truly wonderful New Year!

Ellen Hutson United We Flourish Guest Designer!

September 26, 2017

Good morning! Today, I have the absolute pleasure of being a guest designer for the September Ellen Hutson United We Flourish collaboration Blog Hop! This month, Ellen Hutson is collaborating with the ever-fabulous Altenew! The brand new, limited edition Poppy Fields stamp and die set is really stunning, don’t you think? I absolutely love that you’re able to do both the layered floral stamping that Altenew is known for as well as do some coloring with the beautiful outline images provided.

For my first card, I have created a video showing my technique for painting these beautiful poppies using Daniel Smith watercolors in shades of purple. One of my favorite things about poppies is that they come in a myriad of colors, so you can pretty much paint them any color you want! Artistic license is a beautiful thing. 🙂

For this card, I die cut and silver heat embossed the beautiful blooms from the Poppy Fields stamp and die set onto some Arches Cold Press watercolor paper. Next, I watercolored them with my Daniel Smith watercolors in shades of Carbazole Violet, Neutral Tint, and Moonglow using my Silverwhite Synthetic Round #4 paintbrush. After painting, I used Post It tape to mask around the edge of a panel of pale gray card stock, then used my blending tools to blend some Distress Oxide inks in Wilted Violet and Peacock Feathers. I thought that the red undertones of the Wilted Violet might clash with the green undertones in the Peacock feathers, but there was enough blue in both to create a lovely shade of medium blue when blended. So pretty! I also spritzed that with a bit of shimmer spray.

After playing with the arrangement of the florals for a bit, I decided to die cut a few leaves from the Ellen Hutson Poinsettia and Pine die set to add a bit more interest to my floral bouquet. I used the same silver embossing powder to create a “molten” silver look by pressing my Versamark pad directly onto the die cuts, then dipping them in the silver embossing powder, heating it up, and repeating the process two more times (three times total) to create a beautiful silver die cut embellishment. If you’ve never done that before, try it. The finished product is so luxurious.

After I had completed my blending (watch the video for the magical removal of the masking tape. It gets me every time! So cool!), I stamped my greeting from the Poppy Fields set onto the blended panel using Versafine ink and clear heat embossed it. Next, I arranged my florals in a cluster and used Press ‘n Seal to pick up my bouquet and add foam adhesive to the back while still in my carefully-arranged bouquet. Finally, I added a few sequins and jewels just to add a little sparkle.

For my second card using the Poppy Fields set, I have chosen a very autumnal color scheme. Poppies are traditionally red, but come in a huge variety of other colors. I couldn’t NOT paint some red poppies, but I added in some deep, royal purple and some lovely sunrise yellow.

This card has the same basic layout and techniques involved as the previous card, with the exception of my watercoloring medium. I wanted the deep, vibrant colors that you see in the autumn, so I decided to use my Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers to obtain that really rich color. I started by heat embossing the blooms in gold instead of silver onto Canson Montval watercolor paper, then I die cut them with the coordinating dies. The rest of the techniques are essentially the same; I used Candied Apple and Spiced Marmalade Oxide Inks for the background.

For the greeting, I also used another Ellen Hutson sentiment set: Fancy Thanks. I added the sentiment using black ink, then heat embossed the tiny heart in gold and fussy cut it, then popped it up using dimensional adhesive.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you! I hope you’ve enjoyed my projects using this fabulous new set from Ellen Hutson and Altenew. The United We Flourish blog hop stops at the blogs of the absolutely fabulous Mayline Jung and Kara Vrabel. You can get direct links to them at the Ellen Hutson The Classroom blog.

Now, for some prizes!
